Dwarka Expressway gets you from Gurugram to the Delhi border quickly. Then you reach Mahipalpur.
The 3 km tunnel section near the airport has become the corridor’s worst bottleneck. Motorists report waiting up to 20 minutes there at peak hours. A new traffic master plan aims to fix that.
The plan was prepared by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the airport’s operator. Its main proposal is to extend the 8-lane Dwarka Expressway to the Ring Road at Mayapuri, so traffic heading into central Delhi can avoid Mahipalpur altogether.
The plan also includes:
• a new flyover from Rezangla Chowk
• a Rangpuri bypass
• extensions to the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Barapulla elevated road
• a link road from Talkatora to Barapulla
• the Greater Southern Peripheral Road on the Gurugram side
This is still a proposal. According to The Tribune’s report in May, high-level meetings are under way to settle the funding and approvals. No construction timeline has been announced.
There is a separate project on the Gurugram side. GMDA has a ₹52 crore plan to renovate a 9 km stretch from Basai village to IFFCO Chowk, covering road repairs, new footpaths and better drainage. That plan is waiting for approval from GMDA’s High-Powered Works Committee.
For people living on Dwarka Expressway who work in central or south Delhi, the Mahipalpur jam is the biggest weakness of the location. A direct link to the Ring Road would address it. But proposals like this can take years to get approved and built, and some never are.
When you compare projects, look at the roads that already exist: the expressway itself, UER-II, and the service roads GMDA is finishing now. Count anything still at the proposal stage as a possible bonus, not something you’re paying for today. If a salesperson quotes this extension as a reason for a higher price, ask them when construction starts.
